Italy has a public healthcare system, the Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN), which covers basic care for all persons residing (residenza) in Italy. However, the limitations of this system quickly become apparent in everyday life: in many places, there is a shortage of general practitioners and specialists, and there are often very long waiting times for appointments or screenings – with sometimes mixed quality and cumbersome administration.
In contrast, private clinics often have well-qualified staff, better equipment and faster availability. However, these services are usually not included in basic public coverage or are associated with high additional costs.
